E4MC vs Essential Mod
E4MC Mod or Essential Mod for hosting Minecraft worlds with friends? Compare setup, who needs the mod, extra features and privacy.

Both the E4MC Mod and Essential Mod let you host a single-player world for friends without port forwarding. They take very different approaches, and the right choice depends on what your group already uses.
Side-by-Side
| Point | E4MC Mod | Essential Mod |
|---|---|---|
| Who installs it | Host only | Host, and friends for invites |
| How friends join | Paste a domain | Accept an invite or use a join code |
| Extra features | None; focused on hosting | Friends list, chat, screenshots, cosmetics |
| Source code | Open source, MIT | Proprietary |
| Accounts | No extra account | Uses Essential's own account layer |
Setup Effort
E4MC is a single jar with no configuration. Essential installs more features and shows onboarding screens. Neither is hard, but E4MC gets out of the way faster.

Friends Without Mods
This is where E4MC stands out. Friends can join from a completely unmodded client as long as the world itself is vanilla. That makes it ideal for mixed groups where not everyone wants to install anything.
Features Beyond Hosting
Essential is a bigger package. If your group likes built-in friends lists, direct messages and cosmetic items, those extras may be worth the larger install. E4MC deliberately does one job.
Privacy and Transparency
E4MC's client and relay code are public, so anyone can review how traffic is handled. Essential is closed source but widely used. Both avoid exposing the host's home IP address directly to friends.
Verdict
For quick, lightweight sessions, E4MC is hard to beat. For a social layer on top of Minecraft, Essential is the fuller product. See more options on our alternatives comparison, or compare with the classic approach in E4MC vs port forwarding.
